The Easiest Mistakes to Make During Your Remodel

We all make mistakes, some harmless, some that are very cost worthy, regardless we’re human. At Seasons Interiors, we like to praise mistakes because we would never learn or improve for future projects. Recently we finished a big summer rush of projects, and we’d like to share a little of our trial and error process for you to learn from too!

Remodeling is H-A-R-D, let me tell you something. There are SO many little details that go into each section of our houses that we are oblivious to until we start taking saws to them, right? If you’re thinking about remodeling a part of your home, here are some tricky things to consider.

We have had to learn this one the hard way a few times, whether it be for a heating vent, or a toilet placement, it’s important to double and triple check the hidden spots.

Soffits are a great example of this. A kitchen soffit is usually a boxy structure built down off of the ceiling to hide wiring, pipes, or other mechanicals, or to fill the space between the top of your cabinets and the ceiling. Depending on the age of your home they may be very large and perhaps even extend out past the cabinets.

In most modern remodels, space and openness are a main focus, and soffits inhibit this. Before you make the leap and decide to off yours, make sure that it is in fact empty, or that you’re willing to pay to get whatever is in there, moved. I would also be sure to have a professional contractor be the one to inspect your soffit to see that it is safe for removal.

Another hidden spot that gets us in trouble is basement ceilings, checking which way the beams run so we can place things like toilets or vents. Depending on if they run from front to back or left to right can prevent you from moving plumbing and or running vents from the inside out without having to have a soffit in the basement.

Luckily we have trouble shot these issues as they came along, but now are more keen to look out for them before they become an issue. If you're thinking about doing some kind of remodel, contact us today, we would love to help you create the space of your dreams.

Cheers!
